Encyclopedia of Life

Language: English

No. of terms: above 50,000 and growing

Description: The Encyclopedia of Life (EOL), a site that went online less than a year ago on February 26, 2008, is an ambitious project to organize virtually all information about life present on Earth. The concept is to establish “a series of Web sites—one for each of the approximately 1.8 million known species—that provide the entry points to this vast array of knowledge. The entry-point for each site is a species page suitable for the general public, but with several linked pages aimed at more specialized users. The sites sparkle with text and images that are enticing to everyone, as well as providing deep links to specific data.”

Example Term: Clearly it is impossible to copy an entry into Dictionary Net. May give EOL a test ride with the entry in the TURKEY BUZZARD. This very impressive and comprehensive entry shows what high standards EOL maintains.

Keywords: Zoological nomenclature, species biodiversity, known species, taxonomy, geographic distribution, collections, genetics, evolutionary history, morphology, behavior, ecological relationships.
